On Saturday I did my first ever official 5K. Oh sure, I had to run a 5K in a certain time to go trekking in Nepal once upon a time, but I was 14 and skinny. And of course there was that whole police academy thing. I ran because I was terrified of my instructors, and also because I was the first female deputy in the history of my county and I wasn’t going to let the old boys club win. Even then, I hated to run, I mean I would literally seethe with hate at the thought of it. I could never get my breathing right, I felt like my boobs were gonna fall off, and it just didn’t feel like I was doing any good for myself. None of those feelings have changed.
Despite that, I have got to get off my ever fattening ass (well, technically it’s mah belly as my ass stays flat no matter how much I try to get a bubble butt) and DO SOMETHING. Out of this need to DO SOMETHING came my crazy plan to do 13 5K’s in 2013. Yes, 13 in 13. Like, one a month but with a little lagniappe, a “baker’s dozen” if you will. And I might do two in one month here and there, because when it’s 100 degrees in the shade come July, the only thing I plan to do outside is lay in the pool and drink. I’m still me for goodness sake! But, this me is gonna put some miles on her shoes.
Yesterday was my first “official” 5K. And I did it! Yay ! I had some awesome friends that did it with me, and even though I’m still more of a walker than a runner, it’s a start. I must admit, it was neat to see all of the different folks out running/walking and just cheering us on. There were people of all ages, kids, even people with dogs. In my looking around at different races to run, I’ve found mud runs, foam runs, even ones that let you bring your dog. These are the ones that I am most jazzed about, and I can’t lie, I’m also enthused about the t-shirts, cause y’all know I love me a good t-shirt.
This is me at the finish line, and I am some hot sweaty mess, obviously. And you better believe it was tough not to run right thru that Jacks for a bologna biscuit, but I didn’t.

Oh, and I want some of these. I’m not sure if they serve any purpose, but they must, because doesn’t bacon make everything better?

Also, it’s some damn good friends that will have you a mimosa waiting at the end of your 5K. Thanks Mark, Chad, Katie, Rod, Tom and Stephanie for being there with me yesterday. I had a blast and you may just have helped create a monster, because I have already looked up about a dozen more 5K’s I want to do !

Here’s to the continued success of “#13in13″ and that I find some damn shoes that don’t hurt my Fred Flintstone feet.
5Kim indeed.

Love this post!! You’ve inspired me to run more this year too! I feel your pain, literally, on the boobs and the feet. Get an enell bra. You will love it! I also have a couple moving comfort bras that I really like too. I’ve tried all shoes too… Nike, saucony, new balance, asics, mizunos, brooks. I have to get stability and motion control. My faves are my new balance. I always go back to them when I try other brands. The 1226 is what I’m using now.
Great job Girly!!!!
You should be SO proud of yourself!!!
Meg
I HAVE THOSE SOCKS! They are so comfy! But, as you learned, not the right running socks. Oh well. Best of luck with different socks for the rest of your runs!!!
Yay!!! That’s so exciting! What a fun goal! Congratulations!
Well even though Poppy said they’re not running socks, you could probably use them as such, because they look kind of like compression socks, which are definitely the rage with runners lately (I have a pair….love them). I usually wear them after a run, but I definitely see people wearing them during as well.
Can’t wait to see more 5Kim posts!
Go to the Sports store and have them fit you with running shoes. We have a Scheel’s in Fargo, ND (it’s where i shop)and they are great with whatever you need. I think this is pretty much localized though I have heard they have moved out of ND and into some other states. Also wicking socks! Keeps the moisture away from your feet which makes blisters.
I worked at a nursing home one winter and after the first day I realize I needed good shoes to hurry and scurry. I went to our local Scheel’s store and told them what I was doing. Also I have flat feet. He put me in shoes that to this day keep me balanced and it’s the first time in my life I walked upright with no inward tilting. I try to keep them just for chores and walking so they are still nice. You just need to find a specialist. They know what the heck they are doing.
And congrats on the 5K. You go girl!!
Hugs from Minnesota
