Occupy

I haven’t really gotten into the whole “occupy” thing because really, I’ve been too busy “occupying” the recliner in front of my tv (FOOTBALL), Jordan-Hare stadium and my seemingly permanent seat in the study lab at school.

Sure, I know what it’s about, I understand the protests, but I don’t really think many of them have a damn clue what really makes this world go round.  As someone who has worked for the world’s second richest company while making in a month what they make in a minute I am all too familiar with corporate greed and the poor downtrodden worker. But hey, any port in the storm of needing health insurance, right?

As the proud daughter of oilfield trash, I love love love what this lady has to say. You go girl.

I’ve been watching and reading their “minutes” of their General Assemblies. It’s like watching a really bad version of spoiled reality show stars. This woman’s letter is perfect. Luckily the local group at least keep their area clean, but reading their drama is hilarious. It’s like they are all back in junior high, arguing over who’s in charge, some people taking the money and supplies and deciding alone who in the group should get what, including the food. Just sad.

  • I’m so indecisive in general that I can barely decide which underwear to wear each day, so naturally I’m not sure where I stand on all of this. However, a friend posted this on Facebook and I found it pretty interesting.

  • Sybil Law:

I see all sides of this issue, but my main problem with a lot of the Occupiers is that even THEY don’t seem to know why they’re there. I absolutely believe some bankers should be in jail, though. Eh.

  • Mel:

I am the same as Sybil Law above. I read this one and it gives a totally different perspective.

Everyone has their opinions but it is nice to see that at least on this blog they are allowed.

  • I’m part of the 72%, giving 28% of my money every single year for the last 20 years and trying my best to live off the 72%. From an occupy position, I understand why the protesters are there and trying to make a point for change.

I also understand those that are part of the 53%. We are all just trying to gain some place in this society without getting completely run over by those who want it all, including our percentages.

  • I am with Marty. I will even take it a step further and say regardless of what “percent” you are, the distribution of wealth in this country (much less the world) is not equal and that has to change. Is it all Wall Street’s fault? Probably not. Is Wall Street a good start? Definitely.

In the meantime, we hold on to ourselves, our family and friends, to what we have and try to help others.

  • I’m proud to be a daughter of “oilfield trash” too! Oil patch FTW! (Did your dad call shifts “towers”? Like “morning tower”? (spelled “tour”, actually).

My brother still works in the oilfield. He and I argue about conservation sometimes. I say “We need to save oil for stuff that IS important” like iPhone cases and heart valves – and find some alternative sources for other things.

But that aside, what I want from an Occupy perspective is this: a fair shake for all Americans. Not income redistribution, not an end to corporate greed, but simply for elections to be publicly financed so that the big guys can’t always stack the deck in their favor. They have access to politicians and can demand laws be written to benefit them. We don’t. And as long as that is the case, things will keep getting worse for the little guy and better for the well-to-do. The 60 Minutes with Jack Abrahamoff explained how the system works now. I want it to work for everyone, that’s all.
